Speaker, chairman, consultant… I am IAM

Me, myself and my digital I

The world is changing at break-neck pace. We are living in a world where the physical identity is more and more interwoven with our digital identity. We all have a few of those, but how about digital identity within education? On the Dutch-language website ChannelWeb, I advocated a digital identity to access all one’s studies and trainings.

Consultancy & Projectmanagement

As a consultant, I play a role in organisations at various levels. On the one hand, I assist my clients in developing their vision and mission with regard to digitising their services or products. As a sparring partner, I also support them in respect of tooling and strategy. On the other hand, as a programme or project manager, I regularly get down to the nitty-gritty regarding the implementation of policy decisions my clients have taken. For instance, I will assist in configuring and guaranteeing processes, procedures and technology in such a way that the organisation can take charge of it. On the basis of a targeted, client-centred approach, I enjoy working pragmatically and flexibly towards the required results – persisting where others would stop – and always meeting the clients’ deadlines.

Moreover, I often act as a sounding board, which – in turn – gives me the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience with others. I am critical, but in a constructive way. And sometimes, I play the devil’s advocate. While digital identity issues do not always feature prominently on the executive board’s agenda, preventing security and data breaches will constitute incentives for executive boards to take action.

I am a team player, aiming for innovation and renewal. To me, innovation is an opportunity rather than a challenge. I see myself as ambitious, independent and sharp, having the guts not to take everything at face value, but I will always feel loyalty and respect towards my commissioning client. Integrity is very important to me. While I can rely on solid expertise, I consider it a must to keep developing it, in the same way I keep working at my personal development.

Clients and co-workers tell me I am enthusiastic and tenacious. I focus on quality, am sensitive, empathic, sometimes headstrong, but always professional. I enjoy entrepreneurship and leadership, and I am deeply interested in the human side of the person/people I am dealing with. I like, and am good at, taking responsibility. In doing so, I always attempt to bring people together.

I am capable of talking at various levels, both with ‘techies’ and at a more abstract level. Sometimes, I’m involved with organisations where technology does not play a role as such, while its implementation does matter. In such cases, it can be important to convince the management why it can be better to do some things differently.

In cases like this, my knowledge and experience and my network will provide added value, as will my ability to bring people together. I will never claim to have the monopoly on wisdom; a bundling of forces may also apply.

Many of these characteristics stand me in good stead with regard to the IDnextplatform (www.idnext.eu), which I founded myself. IDnext is a not-for-profit organisation, with a wide range of participants. It focuses on innovation issues regarding digital identity in the public and private sectors. Moreover, it shares its thoughts on subjects respecting (but not restricted to) eIDAS, self-sovereign identity, mobility, privacy and data.

Continuity and stability are very important to me, both at work and at home. I’m forever steeping myself in the world around me, as I am curious to find out more. Even though I work long hours, I do my utmost to be there for my partner and my family. I used to play a lot of football, at a high level, and now my children play football as well. That is why I can be found on the football pitch most Saturdays, as a coach and as a dad. This helps me relax, too. Travelling is another passion of mine.
